Bolsonaro taken into custody after being deemed a flight risk

The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."
