Crew Member Discloses Depression After ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the followers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

About the Mission

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The group of women also included leaders in multiple disciplines.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
