It has been 30 years after the first Toy Story film debuted, launching Pixar as a leading film company and bringing audiences to beloved characters like the cowboy doll (the actor) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now household names.

In 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a brief look into the storyline but leaving fans wondering how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Toys

The preview shows Bonnie — who received the toy collection when he left for college — getting a brand new plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the characters appear to consider it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the teaser doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is back with his friends in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a fair and helping giveaway items locate loving owners.

Surely, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have returned with him. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?

Connections from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some elements are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his fresh path was hand over his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip shows the insignia attached to her shirt.

It is hoped she is still the key figure among the toys.
